This attractive setting of verses (excluding those concerning the Magi) from the well-known Christmas hymn is highly suitable for use in a service of nine lessons and carols.

Being set for soprano, alto and a single line for tenor or bass singers, it is very accessible.

Women or children have a lively melody in the first verse, men an initially darker version in the second as the star rises above Bethlehem, then all parts reprise the opening theme in harmony for the last verse. The organ provides a bright, starry accompaniment to complement the voices.
