This setting of a well-loved text from the Sarum Primer of 1558 can be found in the The Oxford Book of Easy Flexible Anthems, published by OUP in January 2017.
It is suitable for any reflective season or service, such as Lent, a Requiem Mass or the commemoration of All Souls, or simply as a Communion motet or Evensong introit or anthem. With its meaningful text and emotive music, and with considerable scope for musical interpretation, it has also been used to good effect in chamber choir concerts.
As with the 65 other anthems in this major new resource, the anthem can be performed by a range of different combinations of voices: by SATB or SA&Men choirs a cappella, by SA & organ/piano or as a unison or solo song with accompaniment.
The OUP recording of God be in my head (in the version for unaccompanied SATB choir) can be heard here:
Sample pages from the collection include a page of David’s anthem (no. 27), and the whole collection can be ordered direct from OUP.
